Dependence on benzodiazepines

 

Dependence and withdrawal can occur, particularly with short acting BDZs (e.g. temazepam) and appears more frequently if the drug is stopped suddenly. Symptoms tend to last less than a month.

• Physical symptoms- nervousness, tremor, appetite loss, convulsions, tinnitus, muscle cramps and weight loss

• Psychological symptoms- irritability, insomnia, nightmares, perceptual changes and depersonalisation
