Addiction support services
Currently GPs refer patients to specialist treatment services for prescribing and monitoring treatment in abuse. The Misuse of Drugs (Supply to Addicts) Regulations 1997 state that only practitioners holding a Home Office licence may prescribe or administer diamorphine, dipipanone or cocaine for the treatment of addiction.
In England, all cases where structured drug treatment is being provided for drug dependence must be reported to the local National Drug Treatment Monitoring System (NDTMS) team so that patterns of abuse can be identified and services targeted in the areas which require them the most.
