What is addiction?
Addiction is defined in Psychology Today as “a condition that results when a person ingests a substance or engages in an activity that can be pleasurable but the continued use/act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, relationships, or health. Users may not be aware that their behaviour is out of control and causing problems for themselves and others.”
The use of illicit drugs, such as opiates, cocaine, cannabis, amphetamines and benzodiazepines, can have acute and chronic effects on the brain and can result in tolerance and dependence (both physically and psychologically) on the drug when used persistently. Psychological dependence can result in intense cravings for the substance, even after an extended time period since the last administration.
