Use of benzodiazepines in pregnancy

It was originally believed that the use of benzodiazepines in pregnancy could result in facial clefts and cardiac malformations, but later studies have found no evidence of this.

However, a study in to the use of benzodiazepines in the third trimester found occurrences of the following:-

  • Floppy infant syndrome

  • Sedation

  • Hypotonia

  • Reluctance to suck

  • Cyanosis

  • Impaired metabolic response to stress
