Use of amfetamines in pregnancy

The use of amfetamines while pregnant has lead to the following being recorded in infants:-

  • Congenital heart disease

  • Poor growth in the womb

  • Low birth weigh

  • Prematurity

  • Small head

  • Cleft palate

  • Biliary atresia

  • Gastrochisis (abnormal development of the stomach wall)

Studies have found that young children exposed to amfetamines whilst in the womb are more aggressive and have more learning difficulties.
