Motivational interviewing

The principle is to allow patients to persuade themselves that change is desirable, achievable and will bring benefit through engagement and adherence to treatment.

It describes a collection of counselling techniques where the therapist takes the position of a collaborative partner in discussions with the patient about their drug use by asking open questions, listening and summarising the patient's ideas to reflect them back and provide affirmation.
