Treatment for the withdrawal
effects of cocaine
Concurrent medicines for treating withdrawal are:-
-
Benzodiazepines- to treat the “come down” effect and treat insomnia
-
SSRIs- to treat depression, but only after cessation of cocaine use due to the risk of “serotonin syndrome” which can result in overstimulation of the neuromotor and cognitive behavioural centres
-
B- blockers- used to treat anxiety, but may exacerbate cocaine associated asthma
-
Opioid substitutes- used if there is mixed abuse with opiates
