Needle exchange

Needle exchange is a locally enhanced service and the full service description is available on the PSNC website. In order to fulfill the contract, the pharmacy must provide access to sterile needle and syringes and provide sharps bins for the safe disposal of used equipment.

Depending on what has been agreed locally, other items such as condoms, citric acid, swabs and spoons may also be provided. The aim is for harm reduction by reducing the risk of blood borne-infections both in users and the local community (by the safe disposal of needles).

The pharmacy can help promote safe practice, give advice on the risks of STIs, HIV and Hepatitis C transmission and offer immunisation against Hepatitis B. They can als direct users to treatment services such as keyworking.

The service should remain user friendly, client centred, non-judgemental and confidential.
