Treatment of cannabis abuse
Currently, there are no medications are indicated for the treatment of cannabis abuse, but research is continuing, particularly in to medications that are used to aid sleep. Zolpidem, buspirone and gabapentin have shown early promise in small clinical trials. Other agents being studied include N-acetylcysteine and FAAH inhibitors, which may reduce withdrawal by inhibiting the breakdown of the body’s own cannabinoids. Other research is looking into allosteric modulators which interact with cannabinoid receptors to inhibit the rewarding effect of the active component, THC.
Currently only psychotherapy is indicated and support groups such as Marijuana Anonymous UK.
