Use of cannabis in pregnancy
The active component of cannabis, THC, readily crosses the placenta and competes for binding sites on target cells with endogenous cannabinoids in the developing foetus, therefore interfering with axonal development.
Children born from mothers who used cannabis during their pregnancy have been found to have stunted growth and a greater risk of mental disorder, such as ADHD, anxiety and schizophrenia.
