Effects of opiates

 

Opiates commonly cause:-

  • analgesia

  • euphoria

  • sedation

  • constipation

  • itching (due to histamine release),

  • dizziness and vomiting are usually seen only with the first dose

 

Respiratory depression is common in overdose.

 

Usually a small dose is taken in order to achieve a feeling of warmth and wellbeing, while a large dose results in relaxation and sedation. The results can last several hours.
